About Supervisor Hilda L Solis

Hilda L. Solis is the Los Angeles County Supervisor who represents the residents of the First District.

As a daughter of working-class, immigrant parents from Nicaragua and Mexico, she understood at a young age, the challenges that workers face and the dignity that they deserved. Taught to value hard work and give back to her community, Supervisor Solis believes that government, with the right leadership, can help substantially improve the lives of many people. Raised in La Puente, California, Supervisor Solis was the first in her family to attend college at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, despite a lack of institutional support from her high school. From there, Supervisor Solis began developing her political values as a progressive champion for the most marginalized people in our society. Since both of her parents were members of their unions, Supervisor Solis became an early advocate for workers’ rights, better wages, and workplace safety – eventually becoming the United States Secretary of Labor for President Barack Obama...

Leading with Equity: Vaccination Efforts Across the First District

For over a year and a half, the coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered the lives of residents across LA County. Over 1.2 million residents have tested positive, and tragically over 24,000 have lost their lives. Businesses have been upended, schools and places of worship had to close, and stark disparities that have long existed within the County were exposed.

To meet this unprecedented challenge, Supervisor Solis has made equity the guiding principle for the County’s COVID-19 response. Early in the pandemic, that meant protecting essential workers, setting up testing sites in hard-hit communities, and providing personal protective equipment to those most at risk.

And this year, with three highly effective vaccines available to slow the spread and save lives, the Supervisor has worked tirelessly to lower barriers and increase access for all residents, regardless of where they live. This map provides a timeline for vaccination rates in the First District and shows vaccine clinics and mobile units that were set up at the Supervisor’s direction in partnership with community-based organizations and health providers. Through these coordinated efforts, disparities in vaccination rates have narrowed across the First District. In light of this success, the Supervisor remains committed to eliminating barriers to vaccines to ensure that every resident who wants a vaccine can get one, so we can one day put this pandemic behind us once and for all.
